It’s advancing care for better lives!

The Westman Family Seniors’ Emergency Pod will offer a care space within the larger emergency department that prioritizes the wellbeing of seniors while addressing their urgent medical needs.

When older adults spend a disproportionately longer time in the emergency department, awaiting test results, receiving treatment, or awaiting hospital admission, it increases their risk of cognitive decline, including delirium—an acute form of brain failure that leads to confusion and cognitive impairment. Eight hours in emergency is all it takes for 1 in 8 semi-independent or independent older adults to develop the syndrome.

The need to improve the safety, health, and comfort of emergency spaces for seniors is both urgent and overdue.

The reimagined Westman Family Seniors’ Emergency Pod will include:

  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Intentional design features
  • Larger patient rooms, increased privacy, and dedicated caregiver areas
  • Specialized geriatric care teams
  • Early screening and intervention plans used to prevent delirium

Support the Hospital Home Lottery and play a vital role in improving how older adults are cared for in the emergency department.
